Project against water crisis becomes 'water park' in Ribeirão Pires

After flooding streets and buildings in Ribeirão Pires and be temporarily embargoed by the city, the transposition's project of water of dam Billings for the Alto Tietê system turned a risky point of leisure and adventure sports for the residents of the country of São Paulo. The work was done by Sabesp (Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo) and inaugurated in September 2015 by Governor Geraldo Alckmin to prevent the crisis in water supply in the metropolitan area.

Since December 2015, when the transposition reached 100% of transfer capacity, children and even adults have taken advantage of the strength of 4,000 liters of water pumped per second to swim and practice mode "cross buoy" in which the person goes down the river on a buoy without protective equipment. The fun takes place on weekends on hot days in the channel built by the Department of Water and Power.

"After much trouble, the project has now become the major attraction of young people. On weekends it here full of people. I think is a little dangerous because the staff is very near where Sabesp launches water," said the trade representative Sergio Leon, 42, neighbor to the place. The Sabesp said it will contact the Department of Waters and the Ribeirão Pires City Hall to discuss the installation of signposts along the canal, warning of the risk of bathing in place.
