Lack of funds for maintenance causes daily accidents in Rio de Janeiro trains

Few months before of the Olympic Games, the city of Rio de Janeiro faces several problems. Unfinished works of the subway, congestion in the main avenues of the city, assault waves on the beaches and constant police actions in the poorest neighborhoods. But one issue stands out: the constant accidents in the rail system of Rio de Janeiro.

Daily circulating more than 1 million people in the subway and metropolitan trains that serve the city. Happen frequent derailments, failure in air conditioning systems, power outage and inadvertent locking of the doors, which has left passengers locked in a composition.

Companies who administer this system, the MetrôRio and SuperVia received six fines, the latter for operation failing. Together, the punishment amounted to BRL 499,118.99. Only to the concessionaire responsible for the trains, received four penalties of the state government.

In addition to the problems, the cost of transport rates are on the rise. Now, a subway ticket costs BRL 3.70 and has been announced that in early 2016, the rate will be adjusted to a value above inflation over the last 12 months.
