Dogs volunteers give affection for refugees that arrived in São Paulo

The refugees who come to Brazil need to deal with various challenges to adapt to life in the new country, such as prejudice, language and culture shock.

But a project of São Paulo aims to break down some of these barriers by using a special type of resident to receive foreigners: dogs as Mambo, Nick, Napoleão, Google and Halana.

The program, called Best Friend Refugees, takes dogs to visit a shelter facing foreigners in the state capital. Coordination is the Inataa (National Institute of Securities and Animal Assisted Therapy), which has developed therapy dogs in environments such as nursing homes and hospitals.

Now, double formed by dogs and their owners will monthly until the Passage House Newfoundland, state shelter located in the center, spend an hour with the locals.

Adults and children can interact, play and affection in animals. "A research indicates that the therapeutic lines that using a language not verbal are more efficient for these populations," says Cristiane Blanco, the psychologist chief of the NGO.

The NGO, which works since 2008, has 40 registered dogs. The animals undergo reviews of health and temperament, and those chosen are more sociable, they like to interact with strangers.
