Brazilian police arrest 14 members of the Chinese mafia in São Paulo

On the morning of March 8, the Civil Police executed an operation against a Chinese mafia, which resulted in the arrest of 14 people in the cities of São Paulo and Guarujá. The investigations against this group, were started after an occurrence of three homicides of Chinese people, in the city of São Paulo.

According to Elisabete Sato, a delegate responsible, "During the investigations, were discovered the practice of other crimes, such as cases of extortion, kidnapping, trafficking in women, exploitation, games, in short, a range of activities that give reasons to arrest".
According to the State Department of Public Security (SSP), detainees and victims belong to the Chinese province of Fujian. When they arrived in Brazil, they went to the electronics trade and another to the two factions operating in the central part of the city, extorting money from their compatriots to offer protection and practice other crimes. "When people refused to pay, they were beaten, they had destroyed stores and, in some cases, they took the products from the shops," the secretariat said in a report to EBC.

In the past five months, the Civil Police team approached the Chinese community with the help of the Chinese Consulate to gain a trust from the people who collaborate as investigations. "The investigations resulted in 14 arrests, three of which were flagrant for illegal possession of weapons, and the seizure of four pistols - one .380, two 9mm and one 635 caliber - plus two silencers and BRL 12,500", according with SSP.
